Politics; Sarah Palin, continued...

I am still flabbergasted. And I can't decide whether to watch Palin's speech tonight. I don't ordinarily watch Republican campaign speeches, because I try hard to avoid feeling the kind of anger they inspire in me. But it may be that this is one it's my duty to watch? I don't know.

I do know that I haven't been able to bring myself to believe that John McCain is telling the truth when he or his campaign claim that he knew about Palin's daughter's pregnancy before he chose her as his running mate. I can just barely manage to believe that he knew about the ethics investigation, that he was satisfied that Palin would be cleared on that one and felt that the buzz the story would create was worth the risk. But I'm supposed to accept the idea that he knew about the investigation and the daughter's pregnancy, and he still went ahead and chose Palin?

I cannot, even with my sf novelists's hat on, come up with any scenario in which this represents the behavior of a person who is in full possession of his mental faculties. Even in the context of the principle that any publicity is good publicity, I can't make this plausible.

Maybe someone among you can explain it to me.
