Recommended link; Christmas anecdote...

Recommended: the "Chestnuts Roasting" anecdote posted this morning at ; it's not very long, and it's heartwarming.

Because I'm a linguist, it reminded me of the time [mentioned before in this journal somewhere] when a large audience at a conference watched, holding our breaths, while a graduate student at the podium explained to George Lakoff that Lakoff's ideas about Generative Semantics were completely wrong. He kept saying to Lakoff ..... major founder of Generative Semantics ... lines like "Look, you just don't understand Generative Semantics at all!" The story from Andrew Tobias is more fun.
