Personal note....

I'll be posting late today [provided the bizarre things that are going on on my computer screen at LJ right now .... 7:30 a.m. .... don't mean that it's about to crash entirely]. I'm off this morning to try an experiment, and will let you know later how it turned out....

Personal note, explained....

My scheduled experiment this morning was to go give a ninety-minute talk in town [town of a couple of thousand people] at the Grand Opening of our brand new and very spiffy public library. My topic was science fiction poetry, and my time slot was 10:00 a.m.

I was fully expecting to have an audience of nobody at all. People in my area aren't all that interested in science fiction; people in the U.S. [which includes my area] aren't all that interested in poetry; and at 10:00 a.m. on a Friday morning most people are, quite reasonably, either working or at school.

Much to my surprise and pleasure, there were five people waiting to hear whatever I might have to say about science fiction poetry. They liked all five of the poems that I read, they asked excellent questions and they participated in an interesting and energetic discussion.

There you go. An experiment that succeeded. Even without the advantages that Cowboy Poetry has -- without the horses, the campfires, the covered wagons, the Stetsons, the pistols, and all the rest of the romantic doodads -- it succeeded.

It would be enormously helpful if sf poets could take dragons with them to poetry events.

Tech question....

I have a tech problem, and would be grateful for help.

Except for my journal page itself, everything I go to on LJ today has a block of horizontal lines running across most of the top of the screen, blocking the top three or four inches. I've been trying to find a solution to this through the FAQs -- but the links I need keep turning out to be underneath the blue lines. Same thing when I try to use the "Ask a Question" page -- the place where I'd type in the question is covered up by the blue lines. I'm getting nowhere.

What I'd like to do is just go back to the style I've always used, if that's still an option. I remember that once a while back I had a problem like this and someone among you very kindly sent me the instructions for telling LJ that that's what I want to do -- and it worked. I've been trying to find that post in my Calendar view, without success.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Tech problem, continued....

I'm grateful for the suggestions -- but can't follow any of them. On all of the pages where I would choose a style, indicate preferences, and so on, the page won't let me get to whatever button is needed to post the information. The "news" says that if I wanted to keep my old style I had to ask for it by yesterday -- which is not encouraging. But even if I had some idea which new style to ask to be switched to -- which I don't -- I wouldn't be able to do it, since the page where I'm supposed to do that won't let me get to the "submit" button.

Note: I did check the button to get the "News" announcements from LJ -- long ago -- but haven't been getting any; I hadn't seen the one about the style change, or I'd have taken care of it before the final date.

I'd be happy if I could just use the "Ask a Question" feature instead of hassling you this way, but I can't; it won't let me.

Based on past experience, by tomorrow morning I'll be so Upgraded that I won't be able to do do posts either; if you don't hear from me for a couple of weeks, you'll know that that's what has happened.

Tech problem solved....

I am very grateful to blackmonkeymage for solving the problem for me, and grateful to all of you for your suggestions and information.

Whew. Cyberturbulence.

[Note: It was interesting reading all 14 pages of the comments (and responses to comments) for the LJ reminder about the style change -- especially the hostile bits -- but it sure took a long time.]
