I was born in Missouri in 1936, after which lots of things happened. I'm a writer and educator, retired from the Linguistics Department of San Diego State University; my doctorate is in linguistics. I have the distinction of being the only person, so far as I know, who ever had to write two complete dissertations to get just one Ph.D. I write science fiction, verbal self-defense and linguistics (and grandmothering) nonfiction, and poetry; I do sf art -- mostly watercolor pencil and fiber art and collage; I run a virtual business from my home.

For many years I've been publishing three e-mail newsletters -- The Linguistics & Science Fiction Newsletter, The Verbal Self-Defense Newsletter, and The Religious Language Newsletter. Each one has been $5.00 a year for six issues, and I've been happy to send a free sample issue of one or all of them; there's an e-mail link to me for requesting a sample at my SFWA website -- http://www.sfwa.org/members/elgin . [The Religious Language Newsletter (since January 2000) is archived at http://www.forlovingkindness.org. ] In January 2009 I'm going to be switching to publishing only one e-mail newsletter -- The Lonesome Node, covering the same topics, at the same price, and with the same free-sample arrangement. Which is going to seem very strange to me for a while...

The Memories link on this page will take you to a partial index of this journal.

I'm glad to be added to your "friends" list if you want me there -- but I need to let you know that I can't add you to mine. LiveJournal limits those lists to 1000 names, and I've reached that limit.
