Short story; "Final Exam"...
Final Exam

It was a solemn occasion. The fact that the sun shone brilliant and blue through the windows, clearly signalling joy, was no help. If anything, it made it worse, setting off the grim faces of the Administrators in sharp relief, burning their frowns on their foreheads like Ritual-Markings for the spring festivals. Kelah would have welcomed rain, a dismal weather to match the dismal weather of his mind.

Beside him, his father sat stiff and nervous in the formal robes of his Profession, trying to explain the situation to the other seven men. "My son refuses," he said in the dead voice that Kelah had grown miserably familiar with lately. "He refuses. He says flatly that he will not enter the competitions for any of the Professions."

"Hmmmmmm," said the Senior Administrator.

"I have brought him up according to every dictate of our culture. I have given him everything a boy could want. He has been provided with the finest schools, the most brilliant tutors, the best of--"

The Senior Administrator cut him off. "Yes, yes, Lawyer ban-Tressix," he said, "we understand all that. The reputation of your household is secure, and you need not belabor us with a recitation of all the things you have done for this unfortunate and ungrateful young man."

The Lawyer flushed, mumbling. "I beg your pardon, Citizen Administrator."

The Administrator-Advocate began, then, to ask Kelah the set of questions he had been expecting. Did he understand the consequences of his decision? Was he sure of that? Did he understand that he would be an outcast and a pariah? Did he understand that every credit disc issued to a citizen was issued on the basis of membership in one of the Twelve Professions, and that he would therefore be unable to buy even the minimum necessities of life? And to all of those questions, and more like them, Kelah doggedly answered yes. Yes, and yes, and yes.

"Light's Beard, young man!" the Senior Admministrator put in, "Don't you know you'll be no better off than a woman? You will literally have no rights at all! You will simply .... not exist!"

Kelah nodded. He knew it all. He bowed his head and let it all flow over him again, unresisting, since it had long since ceased to be anything but noise. The disgrace to his family. The pain he would cause his household. The fact that he could never marry, never have a household of his own. The fact that he could not be buried, since all burials were in Profession Plots. On and on and on. He didn't care. He knew it all, and he didn't care. He would not, he would not be shoved into a slot for the rest of his life, his every move and every word until he died prescribed for him by the Regulations Manual of his Profession! He would not spend his life as a slave, the way all of them spent their lives! He didn't even care if they saw his disgust on his face. There was nothing more they could do to him now.

"Are you convinced?" It was his father asking, rigid beside him, his voice almost trembling. "Do you see that it is hopeless?"

The Senior Administrator looked around him, taking a count of the heads nodding an affirmative, and said, "Indeed we do." And he pushed a set of studs on the comset at his side.

"Congratulations!" the comset caroled, red and yellow lights flashing, bells ringing, a jet of perfume of thorka-flowers rising slowly into the air. "Congratulations, Citizen ban-Tressix, you have passed all the tests for admission into your profession! If you will just step into the Robing Room, Citizen, you will be issued your robes and your credit disc! Congratulations!"

Kelah was almost too stunned to ask for an explanation. "What...." he stammered. "What...." And he saw that now they had, one and all, smiles to match the sunshine.

The Senior Administrator pushed another stud and the wall at his left went suddenly translucent. On it, lifesize, was a three-dimensional projection of a young man whose robe -- unlike all the others Kelah had ever seen, with their solid color and single contrasting stripe -- was a rainbow of colors, a mingled and melting absolute riot of color. Around its neck hung a string of tiny haffa-bells, with a credit disc pendant from the center bell. And beside its head was the printed legend: Authorized Costume of the Profession of Revolutionary.

"Oh, no," Kelah breathed. "Oh, please, no..."

The Senior Administrator cleared his throat. "This," he said gravely, "is the Thirteenth Profession. You will understand, I am sure, why it is not publicized."

"Surely," Kelah pleaded, "surely, this is a joke?"

Lawyer ban-Tressix shook his head. "No, my son," he said happily. "It is as true as that you are my very dear son! My only fear was that they would not be convinced, that you would not pass the test. The Light bless you, my son, you have made me a happy man!"

As the Administrators filed out of the room, and his father with them, Kelah gripped his hair with both hands, laid his head down on the table, and beat his forehead against the syntho-wood. "No," he said, over and over and over. "No. No. No." When the fedrobots came to take him to the Robing Room he was still saying it.

They paid no attention to him at all.

Very nice, very creepy. Sounds like a nightmare to anyone in the creative fields. It feels a bit short, but I want to read more about Kelah and whether he breaks any regulations within his profession. I assume he's one of very few members. What happens to him if he breaks a rule or several? Or will he even be able to do that?

But I'm confused about one point: if the Profession of Revolutionary is not publicized, how did Lawyer ban-Tressix know about it?

How creepy it is depends on what a Professional Revolutionary gets to do. My guess is that many of them settle down to become the Loyal Opposition, but that whenever the culture needs shaking up (Jefferson suggested every 20 years) they come to the fore. The Final Exam, of course, is because they by definition are expected to have a serious uphill battle on their hands.

In short, the 13th Profession is their Stagnation Insurance.

How did Papa come to hear of it? I'm sure the kid's guidance counselors took him aside and said "You need to talk to our expert in difficult children." For all they know, it's someone designated to straighten out the kid. But at the top of that profession is someone who not only knows about the Revolutionaries but may even be one.

I'm intrigued by the comments.

I mean, yes, I sympathize a bit with Kelah, with wanting to be a unique and beautiful snowflake and being horrified to discover that he's a variation on a known theme. It's a disorienting period. That said, though... it isn't as horrible as all that. Or at least it needn't be, depending on just where we go from here. What do Professional Revolutionaries do?

I mean, OK, if Kelah is promptly taken to the Professional Attitude Adjustment Center and properly brainwashed like all the other citizens to perform their proscribed role, that's one thing. But if it's more like the Bureau of Sabotage from Herbert's work or the Ministry of Disturbance from Piper's, if it's a kind of institutionalized court-jester role... well, what's so bad about that?

Also I suppose I would sympathize with him more if he wanted to do something that Professional status deprived him of... that is, if his motivation were positive rather than negative.

You know, when Kelah decides to just kill himself, and he finds the Professional Files for Revolutionaries --including several documents about the best ways to commit suicide, how to make a more effective statement, how to regulat pain and time of dying, and so on-- he's just gonna get more depressed.

The Profession of Revolutionary isn't publicized, and yet the robes are a riot of color. This tells me that the public never *sees* them, or they'd know about it. So... there must be some detention area where Revolutionaries are kept separate in order to do their "work" without being discovered...??

There used to be (1950s and 1960s, I think) a standard sf story in which it's revealed at the end that the rebels are actually the people who run everything. This looked like it would turn out to be that story, but the ending was a nice twist.

Keeping in mind that I may have been misled by the EXACT wording of "He bowed his head and let it all flow over him again, unresisting", and by the editing that was done to fit this story into the space allotted...

I find it telling that the examiners didn't even bother to go through the motions of asking Kelah:
. Why are you doing this?
. How do you propose to live, under the circumstances?

I've also thought of a nice add-on for this story. Too bad that the very streamlined structure of the original story clearly can't possibly include this....

There is obviously a Regulations Manual Of The Profession Of Revolutionary, exactly as for every other Profession. This Regulations Manual lists, in a sober and straightforward fashion, everything that is required by the Profession, everything that is forbidden, and a great deal that is optional.

But parallel to the Regulations Manual, there is also a Handbook -- again, exactly as with every other Profession. The Handbook is cheerful, and even chatty; filled with tips and tricks and ingenious suggestions, erudite discussions of strategy and theory, technique-heavy war stories and heartfelt testimonials, sly slogans and multi-leveled jokes to get under the skin of blandly complacent citizens... yes, on those dreary days when the work of fomenting revolution is just too drab and discouraging, you can always open the Handbook at random and find something fresh and inspiring to keep you going!

Gosh, I want to throw up.

Which is exactly the effect that the authors of the Handbook Of The Profession Of Revolutionary were aiming for. Livid, nauseated revolutionaries are effective revolutionaries.

I laughed at the ending - there's this kid, thinking he is sooo daring and sooo different ... and he's _not_. There are others who have had the same reaction to everything.

He sounds like a typical adolescent, struggling to create his identity.

This does remind me of many acquaintances back in the 60's who were what I thought of as fashionable rebels - not out of analyzed conviction, but because a lot of other people were doing it (not poor Kelah's situation at all). They came across as if they had a check list.
When challenged in debate - no foundations for their positions, and no awareness of where their positions were situated in relation to the rest of society. And then there were the trivial incongruities. I once watched a group of SDS members who were going off to the demo at the S Vietnamese embassy in DC stop at an intersection and wait for the Walk light. There wasn't a car on the road for blocks!

Just sort of a satire of nonconformists... I doubt the author thought out what happens to revolutionaries, just thought it was a great twist. It's a short-short-story, after all ;)
