My husband and I have been car-free since last May (we're fortunate to live in an area with fairly good public transit), and since then I've been starting to realize just how profoundly sedentary many (most?) Americans' lives are. I've had to consciously recalibrate my sense of how far is "too far" when giving someone directions. In conversation, a friend referred to something a quarter mile away as "that's SO far away!" Home is only two miles from my workplace, which is a pleasant walk on sunny days, but people here at work just get boggled when I mention that I make that trip on foot regularly.

I've been recovering from a foot injury for about six months now, and due to a flare-up, for the last week I've been under instructions to put myself on "as close to bed rest as you can manage, given that you have to leave the apartment to go to work." I can almost feel myself losing muscle tone.

Ooh, hey now — one of the local libraries has "Sit and Be Fit" on DVD. And I'll be passing right by the branch that has it on my way to a healthcare appointment, so I can pick it up without any added walking.

*perks up* Yay!

Good for you for doing all that walking! I was thirty -- roughly -- before I had a car, and lived in places where it was quite a long trek just to get to the public transportation, and it did me nothing but good. I hope your foot injury will be completely healed very soon; in the meantime, "Sit and Be Fit" sounds like a plan.
