Personal note for Christmas Eve...
Today I'll be making the Christmas flatbread [to go with the Christmas peppers-and-beef-over-rice], and doing an assortment of last-minute odds and ends that have the effect of making my house look cleaner than it really is, and getting ready for tonight's Christmas Eve buffet and gift-opening, and rushing through a batch of other last-minute things I should have done already but haven't gotten to yet, and looking forward to tomorrow when my family will be here with me to celebrate The Occasion. [And having a very good time all the while, for sure.]

I wanted to drop in here and tell you that I hope the holiday you're celebrating will be splendid, and that it arrives complete with electric power and other blessings, and that you don't have to go out and drive around on any icy roads or lie around on the floors of any airports or languish for hours stranded on runways in any airplanes. And to those of you whose situation doesn't fit that profile: I wish you fortitude, and may you have good company with you to make the difficult time go by more quickly and pleasantly.

I'm a lucky woman, myself; I have electricity, I don't have to go anywhere, and I have David Sedaris doing his Christmas Elf monologue in the background while I type. These seem to me to be three good omens.

I know this message doesn't rhyme or scan -- because I didn't plan ahead properly -- but I'll bet that it can be sung to the tune of "Gilligan's Island" or "Bonaparte's Retreat."

The happiest of holidays to you and your households, each and every one; and may the New Year treat you gently...

Thank you for your seasonal good wishes, and I return them in full.
I also have electricity, warmth, and calm... a not impossible taskload for the rest of the day... and the prospect of a very happy, busy year to come.

Many blessings on you and yours! You are a shining example of a woman who uses well her time and talents.

Best of the holidays to you, too!

(I must say that David Sedaris' Santaland Diaries is one of my favorite Xmas traditions, too.)

I too have electricity, warmth and shelter (and the cluttering and de-cluttering, of course!) Thank you for the miscellaneous challenges, amusement, amazement, pleasure and peace of mind that some of your posts have given me over the past year.

May the peace and joy of Christmas surround you and your family.

Thank you. I am blessed with warm shelter, sufficient food, and loving family (both natal and of-choice).

I further am blessed with glorious weather for the day, which yesterday's weather did not promise. I have beautiful sunshine, a lovely white Christmas, and pleasant temperatures (for Minnesota in December). These make for a safe trip to my mother's place 3 suburbs over.

May your holidays continue to pass pleasantly, and may any last-minute fandagoes that arise be resolved quickly and easily!

I appreciate that you remind yourself (and us, since we can read your words) to be grateful for the basics. I too have electricity, shelter, and safety, and I can go to visit my family tomorrow and stay for a few days with them.

Best wishes for the holidays and the new year to you as well!

(michael farris)

getting over a two day bug in Poland (where Christmas eve is far more important than Christmas day).

I would look up the Santaland diaries but everytime I listen I'm overcome with a desire to address people as "oh, little elf! little elf!" (and strangely not everyone reacts positively).

May the holidays find you well and happy.

And I, too, thank you for reminding me that I have so much that I take for granted: light, heat, food, friends, and so much else.
