Personal note....
We started this day at my house with a clogged drain in the bathroom, followed by a spectacular array of ghastly events that I'm sure you can imagine without my providing details. I'm running terribly late at this point -- scrubbing is a very labor-and-time-intensive activity -- and am unlikely to get a decent post done today.

I do want to thank you, however, for all the responses to my question from yesterday about what you'd do on your first day as President [in January 2009, yes]. So far as I can tell, all the comments so far have come from roughly the same side of the political fence; if you're on the other side, please don't let that keep you from responding.

I would not make a good president, and knowing that, I make no comment on it.

It is also why, while I examine with care and interest what the current president is doing, I don't make quick judgments on whether it should have been done better or differently.

Very close to my own position where the prospect of me becoming president is so alarming that I can't actually think of any first thing to do besides starting to shop around for a new country to move to - one that's smart enough to not elect a flake like me. I fully realize that the question is not about me personally, but still the concept is ... unsettling.

I'm even flawed enough that I don't excuse myself from quick judgements (and my judgements on the current administration have not changed from the 2000 debates.
Back then one night I was watching on CNN International with the sound turned off and saw Bush giving off _hugely_ negative body language, and I thought he must be talking about something he completely, utterly opposed and would never let happen. Imagine my surprise when I turned up the sound and realized he was talking about ... improving public schools.

My full sympathies for plumbing unpleasantries. I've experienced those a time or two (too often!) and would not wish them on anyone.
