Because the holiday season isn't all that far away....
Because the holiday season is fast approaching, I thought it might be useful to post in advance the links to some holiday-season-relevant posts in this journal....

1. Two posts about various handcrafted gifts, with instructions....

2. The index to posted lyrics for some holiday filk-carols....

3. The index to my favorite holiday recipes, including a good basic bread, a good basic flatbread, the fruitcake I make every year, and a wonderful cheesecake that doesn't cost the earth and doesn't take all day to fix...

Awesome, thank you! I've been hankering for a good fruitcake, and I can't find my Grandma's recipe. I think I might change the candied fruits for dates and dried figs and such, and I need to get a spray bottle to fill with bourbon for regular spritzing. (IIRC, Grandma always basted her fruitcakes in bourbon, which gives a lovely, woodsy complement to the sweetness of the fruit. The spray bottle is just because I'm lazy and watch too much of Alton Brown.)

Come to think, this is about the time to make a fruitcake. I'll probably make one for next Christmas in, oh, January? Let's hear it for cakes that improve with age (as all things should and too few do).

Fast approaching? Gaah. Would that those words were left unuttered. Betwixt now and Thanksgiving I have to sell one house, find and buy another, and transport myself, my wee doglets and the rest of the household the 3,300 miles that lie between the two. I'd much rather continue to believe that I have the better part of three months for this gargantuan task.

*Grins*

Holiday season not that far away? It starts *Wednesday night* around here. And there's another a week from next Saturday, and then a whole week starting the very next Wednesday and ending the Saturday after that.

*Has chicken soup and gefilte fish simmering on the stove, a turkey defrosting in the fridge and the makings for another big meal waiting for attention*

We do some decoration for the little hut we build for that last week, but we don't have to worry about gifts - just lots of synagogue and lots of food.

Jewish holidays loom large for those of us who observe them; not so much for the rest of the world, except in places like New York City, where things pretty much shut down because of the demographics.

This year, the High Holidays are early and on an inconvenient day of the week which both reduces the amount of time we have to prepare and increases the amount of preparation we need to do.

I do love them, even the long hours in synagogue, but I wish I had more time!

Great timing! For weeks now it's been too hot to turn the oven on, but we're supposed to get a cold front through here (Oklahoma) on Tuesday, and I'm really ready to BAKE something!!!

I hope you do get enough relief from the heat there in Oklahoma to make the thought of baking bearable; I know it has been awful. We were braced here for the heat wave that had been blasting Southern California to come this way, but so far [knock on wood!] we've dodged it. Plus, we've had almost eight inches of rain, which is wonderful for the wells and the creeks and the ponds and has also produced many fieldfuls of sparkling clean cattle.

I'm really enjoying the image of many fieldfuls of sparkling clean cattle.

Thanks for a very welcome smile this morning!

Thank you so much for the links. Especially since I tend to read your posts early and thus miss a lot of the comments. This way I not only get to refresh my memory on your posts, but also to see the interesting responses you got later on. I especially appreciate the commenter who shared pictures of her version of your crocheted bowl.

You forgot to mention that these delightful carols are available on a cd by you called "Christmas In Orbit." In fact, I think I'll go play some of them right now.

:)
