Personal note....
What we've been seeing on television about the weather in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas is pretty scary, and keeps getting scarier; it worries me. I hope that those of you living in those areas are all right.

Wet, dealing with cranky kids who can't go out. Very glad I don't live in the low-lying areas in Haltom City, Watauga, and North Richland Hills. We're high enough to be safe, just inconvenienced by road flooding. We're sensible and careful and *don't* drive into flooded areas.

I'm glad I'm not out west anymore - reading about 116 F temps out there makes me feel much better about the rain.

Air conditioning makes that all right. Yay, modern technology!

I had to laugh at the silly weather reporters, who kept saying things like "So we're going to be in the hundreds for a couple days, and then things will go back to being seasonal in the 80's..."

There is nothing seasonal about 80 degree weather in California in July. And that's the way I like it... *grins*

Funny that I should read this when it's micturating down once again. The DFW area is pretty much sodden and is doing an impressive imitation of Seattle, but so far Plano seems to have avoided most of the nasty after-effects. Still, I'm glad that I live in a second-floor apartment on top of a hill.

We're fine, thanks for asking. Our septic system is flooded (but we're coping with short-term work-arounds) and it's rained here every single day for more than three weeks, including that one night when we got more than 14 inches, but the bridges have been mostly re-built and all the homes in the area are pier-and-beam construction, so there's no actual house-flooding in my subdivision, just fences down.

Some of the trailer parks in the area have been evacuated, but surprisingly there's been no loss of life, despite the flash floods.

Your septic system is flooded, you're coping with short-term work-arounds for that septic system, it has rained every day for more than three weeks, the bridges had to be re-built, the fences are down, some of the trailer parks have had to be evacuated, there was a night when it rained more than 14 inches .... And there you are, still able -- and willing -- to say, "We're fine" !

Wow. That's amazing. I'm sorry that you and your household are going through what must seem like an endless ordeal. I hope that things get better there soon.

I'm doing fine so far... we've had some threat of flood-by-running-water, but so far have managed to dodge that bullet. Everything is drenched, many things are molding, I have mushrooms growing out of my composition shingle roof. But our animals are all OK, I managed to get the broken windshield wiper fixed (because driving without a drivers-side windshield wiper in this drek is dangerous!) and we're slogging along.

Thanks for letting me know that you're all right and that you have everything under control. It has to be hard to deal with a mess like that; I hope things start getting better soon.

All okay here in NASA country southeast of Houston. Rain, but no flooding even in flood-prone areas. Some of my friends inland, in Houston proper, have flooded streets but the houses are all okay (so far).

(Note re local building methods--here in the flat and flood-prone Houston area, lots are generally regraded so that streets are lower than buildings. This way, the streets become part of the drainage system and buildings are less likely to be flooded. Thus, flooded streets but dry homes is pretty much "business as usual" here.)

I'm not actually there anymore, but my fiance is, and he's fine. Been having a few issues getting to work due to bridges out and whatnot, but he's only got a 45 minute commute, so it's not too bad.

My experience living there was that you sort of get used to problems like streets being closed for flooding, and all the locals know the spots you have to take at speed in heavy rain because the drainage ditch is out and you will get washed several feet sideways while your car traverses it. It becomes perfectly normal to go out and move the cars up against the house wall because you're expecting 2" hail and to check the traffic reports in the morning to figure out which highways are open for you to get to work.

Austin has held up very well. People living near creeks have problems, but it's mostly been the cities around us having troubles. I feel sort of guilty about that -- parts of the Hill Country are washing away, and I have only an ankle-deep puddle in front of the door.
