Fruitcake afternote....
I forgot -- when I posted the fruitcake recipe -- to say that cheesecloth isn't your only alternative for soaking in rum and wrapping the fruitcake. Unbleached muslin is also okay, and so are plain white cotton dishtowels (kitchen towels) that are lint-free.

Next year I'll use tea towels; thank you!

My family's traditional recipe (very like yours) uses old torn cotton sheets, and pours the rum on only once and then bundles up the foil so the rum doesn't run away. But I think tea towels would work better. Next year. This year's are already aging nicely.

You can't imagine how impressed I am by anyone who makes more than one fruitcake. Awesome.

How else can the cycles of fruitcake-gifting start?

The recipe I have makes 3 - 9x5 loaf pans of fruitcake, so I didn't have an option. This year I left one whole, cut one into halves, and the other into thirds, to make them more manageable. I'm fortunate in that we have a local store that lets you ask for 1/2 c. currants, 1/4 c. turkish apricots, etc., so all I had to do was dump the various contents into the huge bowl and add the other ingredients. I hadn't made fruit cakes in a few years so I'd forgotten how long it takes for the simmered fruit to cool so it was a late night for me. Christmas Eve I unwrap the first one. (Family tradition says Thanksgiving weekend is the last possible date to make them in order to let them soak up enough rum by Christmas Eve.)
